TrackIR used to be all but indispensable for hardcore flight simmers like us. Before the days of VR and ultrawide monitors, TrackIR was the only way for you to get the situational awareness that is so necessary for flight sims like DCS. TrackIR is still the best bet here. The thing with VR is that it mirrors movement which, while immersive, makes it rather difficult to check your six.Exclusive brethren wedding ceremony
I am not much of a PVPer so this is not that important for me, but you have to decide based on how you play. This is cited as a major critique of VR headsets, and with gen 1 headsets like the Vive and Rift, it really was an issue. But now with improved resolutions on headsets like the awesome HP Reverb or the Rift S, I find it to be a non-issue frankly.
TrackIR wins here. While comfort has improved over time and headsets are pretty light now, there is still a piece of plastic attached to your face. I normally have no comfort issues for an hour or two but beyond that, yea, I need to take a break.
VR is the clear winner here. Depth perception requires 3D vision. With VR, I find it much easier to gauge distances which means you become much better at air-to-air refuelling, carrier landings, formation flying, helo landing and anything that requires depth perception.
VR wins big here again. I still feel amazed just looking around the cockpit and flying nap-of-the-Earth on my favourite maps. I still have my TrackIR and it has served me well. I barely use it now because I prefer VR. But that might not be you. If you play for hours on end or need a competitive edge in multiplayer instead of immersion, then TrackIR is still your best bet.
Along with a multi-monitor setup. Or you can see the summary below:. Gary has been "hard landing" into runways and driving his Subaru Impreza off of cliffs since the late 90s. Now, he spends most of his precious hobby time with his favorite flight, racing and space simulations in VR. Is it still relevant though? Checking your Six TrackIR is still the best bet here. That being said, it is also a matter of personal preference but I vote VR for this one.TrackIR tracks head motions with up to six degrees of freedom 6DOF in later models, allowing handsfree view control for improved game immersiveness and situational awareness.
Head position and orientation are measured by a purpose-built video cameramounted on top of the user's monitorwhich observes invisible infrared IR light hence the name reflected or emitted by markers on a rigid model worn by the user. TrackIR software is used to access and control the camera, as well as adjust tracking and manage game profiles.
The ratio of actual head movement to virtual head movement can be changed, allowing the virtual head to turn degrees whilst the user still looks at the monitor. NaturalPoint have maintained the possibility of TrackIR eventually entering the video game console market. The original TrackIR product was an affordable assistive technology device used for Windows cursor control. TrackIR was embraced by PC flight simulation enthusiasts who saw it as a better alternative to a joystick hat switch for view control.
Between andfive different TrackIR camera models were released with steadily improving specifications. In the NaturalPoint President also the principle hardware engineer described these improvements to the original TrackIR as, "not critical for flight and driving sims, but very important to other types of games like first person shooters. The TrackIR 4:PRO departs from the previous models' clamshell case with a new slim compact design, not much bigger than the diameter of a golf ball.
It has a wider field of view than its predecessors and a new base so it can be attached to flat panel displays. It features a wider field of view and higher resolution tracking sensor than previous models. The proprietary TrackIR interface has become the de facto standard for view control in PC games and simulations and is only intended for use with TrackIR products.
This has allowed non-TrackIR devices to be used for view control, including common video devices like webcams. Early on NaturalPoint updated the interface to require validation using text strings copyrighted by NaturalPoint, and only granted permission for use of the strings to game and simulation developers. This meant other applications wishing to use the interface without approval from NaturalPoint would have to risk potentially violating NaturalPoint's copyright.
Proponents of third party head tracking devices which rely on the TrackIR interface for support in many titles believe the text strings are exempt and fall under fair use for the purposes of interoperability. In October NaturalPoint changed the TrackIR interface and began encrypting the data stream sent to some new titles. Third party devices which had reverse-engineered the previous TrackIR interface were rendered incompatible with these new game titles due to the encryption. The older TrackIR-1 and TrackIR-2 products that use software drivers which are no longer maintained are also incompatible with titles using the new encrypted interface.
As ofthe protocol version 5 has again been reverse-engineered, providing support for possibly all titles using the NPClient protocol. As of there are around TrackIR Enhanced games that can natively use TrackIR cameras for view control with up to six degrees of freedom.Quick links. Then I had an idea, a bit if messing around with a battery and a soldering iron an hey presto!
Now I am completely wireless again! Why is this type of option not available from Natural Point, it could be the deciding factor in future possible sales.
Kind regards, apologies if this is now available and I missed it. Nice handiwork, BTW. I'll give a home made design a try before heading to my nearest electronics shop and paying for a pro to do it.
What battery do you use there? Did you use a resistor or just wired stuff on the go? I know squat in electronics, would you be so kind to explain your method and electronic schematics? I would be oh so grateful.Words with ew
S Sry for the triple post, can't edit. Does it feel heavy on the headset? I regularly use the Track Clip pro and always leave it installed on the headset weather I use it or not so it's rdy on the flick of a switch.
The comfort of the headset isn't altered as far as I could tell but the Headset I am using is a a rather heavy one in the first place. I doubt it weight more than the usually attached USB cable going out of the trackclip pro tbh. I did not use any resistors or electronics, just a simple battery through a switch. LMN11 This seems to work well even in well lit conditions and is lightweight so I do not notice it connected to my headset.
I could have used a battery holder so it would be easier to change batteries but as this was a prototype I cut a few corners.
Astro A50's very nice impressive headset I'd love to get it back on in a wireless setup and have decided that what it needs is a nice lithium polymer battery pack.
I'm going to have a play about with a LiPo battery from a bit of remote control car kit with a micro USB charging circuit and a very small project box as a concept and may post up some pics if I don't blow myself upHow you actually put your lights together into a point model is up to you. The optimal shapes for both clip- and hat-type point models are described here but the actual materials you use to construct them can include almost anything.
For maximum thriftiness, we built ours out of the tubes of three basic Bic pens and a paperclip image E.
We simply cut the pen tubes to the right length according to the diagram linked abovedrilled holes for the wires, and glued the whole thing together. Then, we glued the clip on the back to hold the lights to a headset image F. Is it beautiful? Hell, no. But it gets the job done, costs next to nothing, and makes us feel like MacGyver every time we wear it.
For lots more examples of how a completed point model looks, check out this page. You can download the custom driver here. Afterward, plug in the camera, and you should see Windows recognize it as a PlayStation 3 Eye image G.
After installing the driver software for the camera, you can install FreeTrack itself. The latest version is available at www. First, you have to download the hack file and extract it to your FreeTrack folder.
If you already ran FreeTrack, just uninstall it and reinstall, then apply the fix. To run it as an administrator, just right-click the FreeTrack executable, and choose Run as Administrator image H. First, click the Model button in the upper right corner and choose the type of point model you built. Next, go back to the Cam window and click the Source drop-down and select your webcam.
Clicking the Camera button will show you some camera-specific options including gain and exposure, which you can adjust to increase how bright your point model will appear at the expense of adding noise. Back at the main window, look at the Threshold slider. This sets the brightness cutoff for the point detection. What you want to see are three steady circles, and nothing else. If you see extra speckles or noise on the screen, adjust the slider to the right. In case you don't know, TrackIR is a hands-free infrared tracking device that replaces joystick Point-Of-View hats and keyboard view keys allowing you to move your view in the game simply by moving your head.
It consists of a small camera that mounts on top of your computer monitor and detects three small reflectors either attached to a baseball cap or a clip version that fastens to the side of a headset. That means it detects six axes of movement referred to as "degrees of freedom".
The six degrees of freedom are:. To use TrackIR, a game must be designed to use it. Not all games do and not all support all axes of movement. Refer to the manual for details. The important issues are to mount the camera so that it is at the same level as the vector clip baseball hat clip or the Track Clip Pro clip that mounts to your headset. Also, be sure the camera is lined up horizontally with your reflectors as well.
Spend a little time reading through the manual. You can easily read through it in a half hour or so and it is definitely worth the time. When you first bring up the program, click the Options button and set things up this way:. This is a vital part of the setup. Your Tracking Window should look very similar to the one in this picture.Big dog graphics
The important elements are:. Since it was only the window on the left that was causing the problem, I only needed to put one shade up. Now, I can use TrackIR in the brightest of days and not have to darken the entire room. Next, adjust the settings on the Tracking Window. Click the Settings button and set things up this way:. Setting up a good profile is a slow, tedious process. I spent a couple of months getting mine just the way I wanted it. If you would like to try my profile also referred to as the famous "Dentin's Patch"you can grab it here.
I originally got it from Mace, one of the Aces High WW2 combat game trainers and further modified it to my own taste. A profile is an axes configuration to be used for a particular game or class of games. There are four canned profiles available with the software and you can try them out and if you are satisfied with them, your work is done. Chances are, eventually, you will want to tweak the settings a bit so you will want to learn to build your own profiles.
The four supplied profiles are:.
TrackIR or VR for DCS?
To access the profile management area of the program, click the Profiles tab from the main window:. There are two ways to build a new profile. The first way is to click the New button from the Profiles window:. To give yourself a good starting point, you should click the Defaults button and that will set the new profile up just like the Default Profile.
The second way to build a new profile is to highlight a profile that is similar to the one you want to build and click the Copy button. This will make a copy of the profile and you can begin modifying it. You will then use the Edit button to begin modifying your new profile. After clicking New or Edityou will get a window with three tabs:.
How To Build Your Own IR Head Tracker
In the General tab you will name or rename your profile and be able to give it a description:. Here are the HeadsGaugesand Tracking windows you'll see when you select them from the Preview Windows :.Switch to low-flow: save money, save the planet
The HotKeys tab allows you to modify the keys you use to control your TrackIR device while playing the game. There are three hotkeys used with TrackIR:. Use the Change button to change the hotkey from the default.Head tracking allows you to control your PC with your head.
Mostly used in sim games, head tracking lets you move and tilt your head to control where your character looks. First, you need a webcam.
Most modern webcams will work, but what you really want is one that has a high frame rate, low CPU usage, and an auto-exposure function that can be turned off. You can find a list of webcams that have been successfully used with FreeTrack here. For our build, we went with the PlayStation 3 Eye image C. But we had an even better reason—we already have one, modified to see only infrared light.
The link for the FreeTrack Forum above has info about how to modify a webcam, and if you decide to go with the PlayStation 3 Eye, you can check out our very own illustrated guide to turning it into an IR camera here. The point model is the gear that will, one way or another, let your computer see via the webcam which direction your head is pointed.
There are a lot of ways to make a point model. The simplest is a single point of light—an LED or a reflector attached to your head. When you look up, the point of light moves up, when you look right it moves right, and so forth. Whichever one you want to go with is really up to you. We chose to go with the clip model because we usually wear a headset while gaming.
Your two choices here are infrared LEDs image D and reflectors. The advantage to LEDs is that because they emit a ton of infrared light, your webcam will have no trouble isolating the three points. We happened to have some on hand again, from the Surface Computer but you can find them for well under a dollar apiece at online electronics dealers like Digi-Key. It so happens that the forward voltage drop of the SFHP is 1. If you want to play it safe, you can find a very handy resistor calculator here.

Gyson View Profile View Posts. I know it's something both the community and developers have been wanting to see since before launch. Now that we're supporting head-tracking, can we please have TrackIR support added as well? However, in my house I need to keep an eye on real life, so TrackIR is my preferred head-tracking experience. I would love to see this hardware properly supported in NMS; it makes other games which support it so much more enjoyable to play. Showing 1 - 10 of 10 comments.
